Pain in the shoulders

Bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, a clavicle, the acromion, the orbicular articulation, between the scapula and the humeral head allow the head of the humerus to move very freely to be able to exercise, to lift things, to sleep correctly, to just live your life.

The ligaments, tendons, muscles and joint capsule maintain the shoulder, provides good stability of the humeral head in the glenoid and allows movements of extensions and rotations in all directions. No other articulation of the human body offers such a complete movement.

This results in greater fragility, and a solicitation prone to injury. Tendon problems are common causes of shoulder pain.

Even slight shoulder pain for more than two weeks requires you to see a doctor. Especially in case of nocturnal pain.

What are the causes of shoulder pain?

The shoulder pain can be caused by multiple pathologies: infections, tumors, systemic pathologies, neurological affections, etc.

In the majority of cases, however, these pains are related to rotator cuff involvement (especially after the age of 50).

The causes can also, of course, be traumatic: sprains, tendonitis, injuries, fractures, etc.

When there is no history of trauma, the painful shoulder is often linked to “degenerative” rotator cuff tendonitis. The rotator cuff can also cotain calcifications. It can also break totally or partially.

Diagnostic

To better understand the cause, the doctor will be interested in:

  • History (previous trauma,  daily work requiring a lot the shoulder?)
  • Location of the pain (anterior, posterior, etc.)
  • Character (mechanical, inflammatory, nocturnal, etc.)
  • Associated signs (stiffness, inflammation, discomfort and repercussions on daily life, etc.)

Radiology:

  • Radiography
  • Artro MRI
